The Missouri Compromise was a compromise that admitted Missouri as slave state, and Maine as a free state. It was an issue because if Missouri was admitted as a slave state, there would be unequal representation of free and slave states in the Senate. It also kept balance between the Southern and Northern states which helped keep both sides thinking they had achieved their goals.
